How much concrete do I need?

Concrete is ordered by volume, and volume is always length × width × depth with every dimension in the same unit. The trap is thickness: slabs are specified in inches and ordered in cubic yards, so a 4-inch slab is 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 feet deep, not 4. Getting that conversion wrong by a factor of twelve is the most common concrete estimating mistake there is, and it is the one this calculator exists to prevent.

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. As a reference point, one cubic yard covers 81 square feet at 4 inches thick, 65 square feet at 5 inches, or 54 square feet at 6 inches. Ten yards, a full truck for most plants, covers about 810 square feet at 4 inches.

Every result carries a 10% waste allowance, because subgrade is never level, forms bow under load, and some concrete is always lost to the wheelbarrow.

How to calculate concrete for a slab

For a slab the formula is length × width × thickness in feet, divided by 27. A 10 × 10 pad at 4 inches thick is 33.3 cubic feet, 1.23 cubic yards before waste, 1.36 after. A 20 × 20 slab is 5.43 yards and a 30 × 40 garage floor 16.30 yards.

Driveways and patios use the same slab formula at different thicknesses: 4 inches for a patio, 5 inches for a residential driveway, and 6 where a truck or an RV will park. Each extra inch adds roughly 25% to the volume, and it is cheaper reinforcement than rebar in a thin slab.

What a slab costs is a different question from what it takes. That 20 × 20 slab is about $842 in delivered concrete plus $1,400 in placing and finishing labor at national-average rates, roughly $2,242, or $5.60 per square foot, before base preparation, forms, reinforcement and excavation.

Concrete bag sizes: 40 lb, 60 lb and 80 lb yields

Bag yields are published by the manufacturers and they are what any bag concrete calculator should be working from: a 40 lb bag of QUIKRETE or Sakrete concrete mix yields 0.3 cubic feet, a 60 lb bag 0.45 and an 80 lb bag 0.6. Divide your volume in cubic feet by the yield to get the count, or read all three off the calculator above, which is faster than doing it three times.

Per cubic yard that works out to 90 forty-pound bags, 60 sixty-pound or 45 eighty-pound. The 10 × 10 shed pad above takes 62 eighty-pound bags; the 20 × 20 slab takes 245, which is 9.8 tons of material to load into a car, carry to the pour and cut open.

Weight is the reason to care about bag size at all. Larger bags are marginally cheaper per cubic foot, but 60 lb bags are what most people can lift repeatedly without regretting it by bag forty. Mixing is the other constraint: a wheelbarrow handles two 80 lb bags at a time, a rented mixer four, and neither is enjoyable past a couple of dozen.

Bags vs ready-mix: what a cubic yard really costs

Bagged concrete is the expensive way to buy the same material. A cubic yard bought as 45 eighty-pound bags at $6.50 each comes to $293, against $155 for the same yard delivered by truck. Right now ready-mix sits about 9% above its five-year average on the Producer Price Index, so a figure you were quoted two years ago understates today's price.

What bags buy is scheduling rather than savings: no delivery window to meet, no minimum load, no short-load fee, and the freedom to mix a batch, stop, and come back to it. That is genuinely worth paying for below about 2 cubic yards, which covers post holes, footings, a shed pad or a small patio. Above it the arithmetic turns hard: 2 yards is 90 bags, and the 5.43-yard slab above would be 245.

Ready-mix has one advantage that never shows up in a price comparison: it arrives uniformly mixed and gets placed in a single pour. Batches mixed by hand at slightly different water ratios cure to different strengths, and a pour that stretches over several hours leaves cold joints where each batch met the last. Plants quote by the cubic yard and usually round to the quarter yard, with a short-load fee near $75 under 5 yards.

Post holes, piers and Sonotube columns

Round pours are where a calculator earns its keep, because the volume rises with the square of the radius and nobody estimates that well by eye. A cardboard column form holds 0.35 cubic feet per foot of height at 8 inches across, 0.55 at 10 inches, 0.79 at 12 and 1.40 at 16, so a 12-inch pier 4 feet deep takes about 6 eighty-pound bags. Post holes work the same way with one difference this calculator makes and most do not: the post displaces concrete, and we subtract it. A 4x4 in a 10-inch hole occupies about 15% of the cylinder, which across twenty fence posts is the difference between the right order and a wasted pallet. A standard 10-inch hole 30 inches deep takes 1.9 eighty-pound bags per post, call it 2, and 3.1 where a northern frost line pushes it to 48 inches.

Depth for anything structural is set by the local frost line, which runs from zero inches in Florida to 60 in Minnesota and North Dakota. A footing or pier that stops above it will heave, and heave cracks whatever it carries. That single figure is why identical projects cost meaningfully more in the north. It is bought entirely in concrete and excavation.

Preparing the site: gravel, forms and rebar

A 4-inch compacted gravel base goes under any slab you intend to keep, and 6 inches over clay or poorly draining subgrade. It gives the slab uniform bearing, breaks the capillary path that would otherwise wick groundwater into the concrete, and gives freeze-thaw water somewhere to go. Calculate it exactly as you calculate the concrete, length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27, which puts 4.94 cubic yards under a 20 × 20 slab at $30-$50 a yard delivered, or $200-$600 installed with the spreading and compacting in it.

Reinforcement does not prevent cracks; it holds them together once they form. Welded wire mesh or fiber suits patios and shed pads, rebar on 18-inch centres suits driveways and anything carrying vehicles. Control joints are the underrated part, cut or tooled every 8 to 10 feet in each direction, they put the inevitable shrinkage crack in a straight line of your choosing.

Forms decide whether the finished slab is square. Stake 2x lumber to the line, measure both diagonals and make them equal before any concrete arrives, and set a slight fall of about an eighth of an inch per foot so water runs off rather than ponding. All of this happens before the truck shows up, because once concrete is moving there is no time for anything but placing it.

Concrete cost in 2026

Ready-mix runs about $155 per cubic yard delivered nationally, with a short-load fee near $75 under 5 yards. Bagged mix costs $3.50 for 40 lb, $4.80 for 60 lb and $6.50 for 80 lb. Placing and finishing labor adds roughly $3.50 per square foot for flatwork before regional adjustment.

Those lines behave differently by geography. Bagged concrete is a nationally distributed product whose price barely moves between states; ready-mix and labor are local, which is why the calculator applies your state's multiplier to those two and not to bags. Across the country that is a spread of roughly 35% on the labor half of a slab.

Material prices here are tracked against the Producer Price Index series for ready-mix concrete and concrete products, refreshed from Federal Reserve Economic Data at every build. That is why these figures reflect the current market rather than a long-run average, and why they move between one visit and the next.

How we calculated these estimates

Every figure on this page comes from the same open formula the calculator above uses. Volume is pure geometry, the shape's formula worked in feet, plus a 10% waste allowance. Prices start from 2026 national baselines: $155 per cubic yard delivered, a $75 short-load fee under 5 yards, retail bag prices against the yields QUIKRETE and Sakrete publish, and $3.50 per square foot for placing and finishing flatwork. Ready-mix and labor are then scaled by the construction earnings multiplier the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes for your state; bagged concrete is not, because it is priced nationally. Nothing is hidden behind a lead form and no supplier pays to appear here. What the result is not is a quote: excavation, base preparation, forms, reinforcement, permits and demolition are excluded, and a plant will price your delivery distance and mix specification on top.

Order 16.50 yards, since plants sell in quarter-yard increments. In bags that would be 734 eighty-pound bags, 29 tons to carry, cut open and mix, which is why nobody pours a slab this size from bags. Delivered ready-mix for that volume runs about $2,526 nationally, plus roughly $4,200 in placing and finishing labor.

How much does 10 yards of concrete cover at 4 inches thick?

Ten cubic yards covers about 810 square feet at 4 inches thick: 10 × 27 = 270 cubic feet, divided by the 0.333-foot depth. The same 10 yards covers 648 square feet at 5 inches and 540 at 6 inches. One caveat worth applying: that is finished coverage with no margin, so plan a slab of about 736 square feet against a 10-yard order once the standard 10% allowance is kept back.

Is it cheaper to pour your own concrete slab?

Yes, if the slab is small. Labor is the larger half of professional flatwork: on the 20 × 20 slab above, $1,400 of the roughly $2,242 total is placing and finishing, leaving $842 of delivered ready-mix, or $1,593 in eighty-pound bags, if you do the work yourself. The catch is that concrete sets on its own schedule rather than yours. Everything has to be placed, screeded, floated and edged before it goes off, which is genuinely difficult past about 2 cubic yards with a wheelbarrow and one helper, and a 20 × 20 slab is 5.43 yards. DIY suits a shed pad, a small patio, post holes and footings; a driveway or garage floor is worth paying a crew for.

Do I need gravel under a concrete slab?

Yes for almost any slab that matters. A 4-inch compacted gravel base gives the slab uniform bearing so it does not crack over soft spots, breaks the capillary path that would otherwise wick groundwater up into the concrete, and gives water somewhere to go through a freeze-thaw cycle. Over clay or poorly draining subgrade, 6 inches is the usual specification. Budget $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot installed, $200 to $600 on a 20 × 20 slab, which is cheap insurance against tearing out a cracked one. The exception is a site whose subgrade is already well-draining, compacted sand or gravel; there the base is effectively in place already.

How much gravel do I need under a concrete slab?

Use the same formula as the concrete: length × width × base depth in feet, divided by 27. A 20 × 20 slab with a 4-inch base needs 4.94 cubic yards of gravel; at 6 inches it takes 7.41 yards. Delivered crushed stone runs $30 to $50 per cubic yard, so that base is $148 to $247 in material before spreading and compacting. Order 10-15% over the calculated figure. That number is the compacted volume, and crushed stone loses roughly that much bulk under a plate compactor.

How much concrete does a 12 inch Sonotube hold?

A 12-inch Sonotube holds 0.79 cubic feet of concrete per foot of height, so a 4-foot pier takes 3.5 cubic feet with waste, about 6 eighty-pound bags. How much concrete do I need for a fence post?

A standard 10-inch-wide hole 30 inches deep holds about 1.2 cubic feet once the 4x4 post displaces its share, 1.9 eighty-pound bags, so 2 per post in practice. Depth is what moves the number: the same hole takes 2.3 bags at 36 inches and 3.1 at a 48-inch frost line. A 150-foot fence needs about 20 posts, so plan on 43 to 68 bags with the waste allowance in, $280 to $442 of material. What is poor man's concrete?

Poor man's concrete usually means one of three things: urbanite, broken-up old slab reused as paving; a lean mix with less Portland cement than a bagged concrete mix; or a dry pour, where dry mix is spread into a form and left for ground moisture and rain to hydrate. All three are cheaper than the roughly $155 per cubic yard delivered ready-mix costs, and none belongs anywhere structural. A dry pour in particular cures unevenly and reaches a fraction of its rated compressive strength, because the water never reaches the middle of the slab in a controlled way. Where these approaches genuinely work is garden paths, stepping stones, mow strips and non-load-bearing fill, not a driveway, a garage floor, a footing or anything a building will sit on.

How much waste should I add to a concrete order?

Ten percent is the standard allowance, and the calculator above applies it automatically. It is not padding: subgrade is never perfectly level, forms bow outward slightly under the weight of wet concrete, and some is always lost to the wheelbarrow and the chute. Ordering the exact calculated volume reliably leaves you short, and being short is far more expensive than being over, because a partial second load costs the $75 short-load fee on top of a few yards, and a cold joint forms where the fresh concrete meets concrete that has already started to set.

What is the difference between concrete and cement?

Cement is one ingredient in concrete, not a synonym for it. Concrete is Portland cement plus sand, gravel aggregate and water; the cement is the binder that holds the aggregate together, and it is 10-15% of the mix by volume. Buying a bag labelled "cement" or "mortar mix" when you need "concrete mix" is a common and frustrating trip back to the store, for slabs, footings, columns and post holes you want concrete mix, which already has the aggregate in it.

How long does concrete take to cure?

Concrete is usually walkable in 24 to 48 hours, ready for vehicle traffic at about 7 days, and reaches roughly 90% of its design strength at 28 days. The age every strength specification is written against. Curing is a chemical reaction rather than drying out, which is why keeping the surface damp or covered for the first several days genuinely produces stronger concrete than letting it dry fast in the sun. Removing forms too early or driving on a five-day-old slab are the two most common ways a good pour gets damaged.
